What does this map represent?
The Philadelphia Arts Ecosystem Map is an interactive tool where students, schools, teachers, arts organizations, parents, and the community can search every district and charter school in the Philadelphia school district to find arts resources. This includes human resources (teachers), physical resources (instruments), and arts programs or services from external partners (field trips and workshops).
What are the views and filters?
An initial glance at the map provides a picture of the asset density of arts education resources by school catchment. There is an 'organization' view as well to see the assets for each individual school. For each view, the filters can optimize your search.
- Resource filter shows the human and physical resources. By clicking on human or physical, you can see all of the resources within the city. You are also able to find more specific information about teachers and musical instruments.
- Category filter refers to the type of assets within the city, both art domains and if an asset is a human/physical resource or program.
- Program filter allows you to explore the arts education programs being provided by arts education organizations.
- Service Provider filter enables a view of all schools where a specific arts partner operates.
How was this map created?
This map was created as a collaborative effort of the School District of Philadelphia, the Neubauer Family Foundation, the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, the the WHIMsy (World Heat & Impact Maps) team, I-Space Institute, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Additionally, nearly 100 arts leaders provided feedback on the map.
What is not included in the map (yet)?
When interpreting the map there are few points to keep in mind: (1) there is not yet a visualization for the intensity of a resource which means a full-time arts teacher currently has the same weighting as a part-time arts teacher and (2) Activities are not represented differently due to frequency or student/teacher ratio.
Where is my data?
Data sources include the PA Department of Education, Open Data Philly, The School District of Philadelphia’s Office of The Arts & Academic Enrichment. If you represent an arts partner or a district, charter or faith based school and your data is not on the map (or needs an update), please contact arts@philasd.org to be added. The map will be updated on the 15th of each month.
